The iconic red telephone kiosk has earned landmark status and has its own national conservation plan. Born in 1933 following a successful architectural competition, it was designed by Bergen architect Georg Fasting. The first installation occurred on the docked ship of Amerikalinjens in Oslo. A restored version is now set up in near-native surroundings (refer to attached photo). Following the war, this kiosk design spread throughout the rest of Norway. Public telephone locations were strategically placed with safety and access to necessary services such as doctors, midwives, police, and firefighters top of mind. In 1960s suburbs, apartment complexes, railway stations, and numerous ferry ports boasted these public telephone boxes as a vital service with secondary emphasis on profitability. The last kiosk was produced in 1995, resulting in approximately 9,000 copies of this design being manufactured, with many still in operation today. Its design remained unchanged over the years, except for its reduced weight; the initial 800 kg models weighed less than half as much as later versions. A special protection plan has been implemented to safeguard telephone boxes, employing a team of guardians stationed around the country.
