Technics SL-1200 is a series of direct-drive turntables originally manufactured from October 1972 until 2010, and then resumed in 2016 by Panasonic under the Technics brand name. S stands for "Stereo" and L stands for "Player". When DJs began using slip-mats to cue and beat-mix (and scratch) records, the quartz-controlled motor system allowed them to mix with precision and accuracy. Building a turntable that prioritized high-fidelity sound was crucial, but Panasonic also aimed to create equipment with excellent build quality, low wow and flutter, and minimal resonance - making it perfect for use in nightclubs and public-address applications. Since its release in 1978, the SL-1200MK2 and its successors became the go-to turntable for DJing and scratching. Producers, DJs, and MCs affectionately refer to the Technics turntable as the "Tec 12's", "that record player", and the "Wheels of Steel".
