
Tchouri comet - 67P/Churyumov Gerasimenko

The comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko orbits Jupiter as a member of the Jupiter-family, originating from the Kuiper belt with an orbital period of approximately 6.45 years. Its rotation period lasts about 12.4 hours and its maximum speed is 135,000 km/h or 38 km/s, which equals 84,000 mph. Measuring approximately 4.3 by 4.1 kilometers at its longest and widest dimensions, the comet was first seen on photographic plates in 1969 by Soviet astronomers Klim Ivanovych Churyumov and Svetlana Ivanovna Gerasimenko who gave it their names after discovering it. The comet reached perihelion, or its closest point to the Sun, on August 13, 2015. The European Space Agency's Rosetta mission targeted the comet which launched on March 2, 2004. On August 6, 2014, the Rosetta spacecraft rendezvoused with Churyumov-Gerasimenko and began orbiting it on September 10, 2014.
