Taz 6 Mod - Add Z-Max switches to Z-Uppers to implement self-levelling gantry
thingiverse
This is a set of replacement Z-Upper mounts for the Taz 6. The purpose of these Z-Uppers is to enable you to install a Z-Max switch on both sides (wiring required), allowing you to implement a poor-man's auto-leveling gantry. In my opinion, this is actually not the best way to level a gantry (there is too much positional variance with the installation of switches), but they did it on the Taz Pro, so if you're looking to upgrade your Taz 6 with all the upgrades without breaking the bank on a new printer, this is a good step in the right direction. I actually find that for me the most useful purpose of these switches is to serve as an auditory 'something's out of whack'. I calibrate the nozzle "old school" relative to the bed, raise the gantry, and then adjust the switch position until they click perfectly in sync. Then every time the printer initializes, I listen for the clicks. If they're out of sync - it's out of adjustment. If it's in sync - it's adjusted. From where I'm sitting that's really the only gain of this design - as an actual way to "auto-level" a gantry by forcing stall of one motor - meh. Proper installation of the switches will have the tip of each switch engaging the top inner ring of the Z-Lead-Screw Nut. The switches used are available on DigiKey under part number "SS-3GL13PT" or "SW768-ND". Note, this will require wiring and firmware changes (firmware changes if you want the printer to initialize / home at the top instead of the home switch), as well as changing the wire harness to relocate the current Z-Max switch on a Taz 6. A modicum of Wiring Guidance can be found by referencing the Z-Max wiring for the Taz Pro, found here: http://download.lulzbot.com/TAZ/TAZ_Pro/v1.0.7/production_parts/electronics/external_harness/EL-HR0142_Z_endstop_harness.pdf This design is implemented and performed at your own risk, is not supported, and voids your warranty. Have fun!
