Taweret and other closely related goddesses were forged from the unification of lion, hippo, crocodile, and human characteristics. The three animals were among the most ferocious species found in ancient Egypt and combining their powers created a highly effective deity and thus amulet. Taweret's specific duty was safeguarding women during pregnancy and childbirth. She is often depicted resting against a sceptre symbol. Her representation was occasionally used on tomb walls or funerary objects to shield the deceased throughout rebirth.
