tarquier de Saint tropez
grabcad
The tarquier is well defined and located on the stretch of coastline between the ports of Lavandou and St-Raphaël passing through Cavalaire, St-Tropez and Ste-Maxime.The particularity of the tarquier is to be rigged with a sprit sail (“a tarchia” in Italian). Although less widespread than the lateen sail, the sprit sail occupies a full place in the Mediterranean tradition.Around 1920, the sprit sail however gave way to the lateen sail or the arabian sail (which differs from the lateen by the truncated front point). The tarquier is used for gangui fishing but also for transport across the Gulf of St-Tropez.Its hull differs little from that of other boats in the region. Its main characteristic is the absence of a gunwale, with rowlocks for the oars offset outside the hull, and crossing a simple strake. The tarquiers were usually pulled on the sand, because the port of St-Tropez, until 1920, was forbidden to fishermen and exclusively reserved for trade
