Tardis Transformer V2
thingiverse
The original version was designed as a challenge to see if it could be created, which ended up being far more popular than expected. However, it had several issues such as its large size, fragility and wobbliness. The redesigned version is smaller, more robust and can actually be used as a toy. It has a simplified transformation sequence and the parts are easier to assemble. The new design is 6 ounces lighter and 25% less plastic than the original, making it simpler and more affordable to print. Despite being less posable due to fewer axis of freedom in the joints, this version was significantly harder to design as focus was shifted from appearance to durability. The toy stands at around 8.5 inches tall in robot mode and 4.5 inches tall in Tardis mode. It can be printed using entirely plastic parts without the need for paint or screws. A glue recommendation is given for improved playability. The toy was created on a custom Rostock derivative printer, using PLA with a 0.5mm nozzle and 0.3mm layer height, with 2 shells and 25% infill. Autocad source files are included. Various updates have been made to improve printability, ease of assembly and show-accuracy. Optional parts for a Sonic Screwdriver gun are also available.
