TARDIS Apple Time Capsule -> Bedside Lamp!
thingiverse
I gave away my Apple Time Capsule just two nights ago, and suddenly found myself without use for its five-year-old home. So I quickly transformed it into a bedside lamp, covering the windows with white paper, sticking a LIFX inside, and voila - perfect lighting. To recreate this project, you'll need: * TARDIS Time Machine (this is simply a remix of that original) * A cheap E26 lamp base from your local hardware store * A LIFX Mini (the standard model is too tall, and probably too hot) * A sheet of paper cut into the right size * Superglue and scissors Measuring my base was a challenge - it measured 36mm in diameter at its narrowest point, and about 40mm at its widest. The dimensions were quite large, making it difficult to measure accurately. You can remix my model for your base with OnShape: https://cad.onshape.com/documents/ea336d8d59d01b9f6d00f31b/w/26595e1fea1370c8a1e648d8/e/7a17920d0e8edf44b43698e9 A funny story: I first tried to create this project in Shapr3D on my iPad, hoping to give direct modeling a try and challenge my assumptions. I thought a one-time model would be the perfect use case for it. Unfortunately, Shapr3D is not as user-friendly as I had hoped - once you get everything right, fillets and all, you can't resize things consistently. I spent hours trying to fix this issue, but ultimately gave up. I then remodeled it in Fusion 360, hoping to practice my skills with the software. However, it's still quite miserable to use on a Mac, especially with a trackpad - unresponsive and too much right clicking, not to mention the lack of double click drag gesture. It was awful. Finally, I went back to OnShape, my go-to CAD software for Mac users. I redesigned this project three times in OnShape, and it was done the fastest time yet. Tweaking it after the fact was a breeze - I love using OnShape!
