This is the next generation of the 3D printed Taranis pistol grip R/C transmitter. It is a major overhaul of my first design which you can find it on Thingiverse at (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3956295).

For the build a FrSky Taranis Q7X (ACCST) R/C transmitter is used as a donor for the electronics parts. What bothered me (and others) was the need to source the throttle stick and steering unit from a Traxxas TQi R/C transmitter to build the first version.

So I decided to design a throttle unit and a steering unit that both recycle parts from the gimbals of the Q7X transmitter.

With this task finished there were still some parts on the transmitter that ranged between "unpleasant to the eye" and "awkward usability". This led to a complete redesign which allowed me to recycle even more parts from the FrSky donor transmitter!

Over the course of the project, I've lost track of all the changes I made, but here are the most prominent ones:

Steering input constructed from gimbal parts of original transmitter

throttle trigger constructed from gimbal parts of original transmitter

modular switch consoles on the top and front body parts allow different switch and potentiometer configurations, only the console part needs to be reprinted.

redesign of trim and power button console.

on the front: cutout for more space for the finger to reach "P" menu button

relocated antenna hole cutout allows for folding antennas to be securely stored behind display during transport

hook from the orignal transmitter case can be attached to the rear body part

holes for 5 mm LEDs on the forward-facing body side to integrate flashlight functionality.

more space inside body for easier cabling and assembly

There are lots of 3D files, check chapter 1 of the assembly manual to see which ones you need.

PrusaPrinters does not allow the upload of PDF files, you can find the most recent version of the assembly manual at (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fWCpEuTmwSLpNVkPLH6p791kiwwxQAO1/view?usp=sharing)

During my development, FrSky has decided to switch from ACCST to the ACCESS protocol and also made some changes to the circuit boards. As of September 2020 it is verified that the ACCESS electronics can also be used for the build. You will need two longer flat ribbon cables, since the ones used inside the ACCESS version aren't long enough.

If you want to support my work, you can leave a tip at (https://www.paypal.me/ikletti).

Thanks to Erich Ficker and Ben Newman for their works upon which my design is based and thanks to Sascha Gutendorf for the exchange and discussions!

Happy printing!
