TARANIS (Tool for the Analysis of RAdiation from lightning and Sprites, but also after Taranis, the Gallic god of lightning and thunder) is a remote sensing satellite of the Centre national d'études spatiales (CNES), designed to study the impulsive energy transfers that occur above storms between the Earth's atmosphere and the near space environment. TARANIS is to be launched in 2020 and placed in a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 700 km 2 for a lifetime of at least two years.
