The revered deity Tara, literally a saviouress, was widely venerated in later Buddhism as an autonomous divinity, especially as a divine mother figure. She is frequently depicted holding a flowering lotus stem (padma) in one hand while extending the granting of wishes with her open hand (varada-mudra). The Green Tara, Syama-tara, closely aligns herself with Avalokitesvara Padmapani, the Buddhist embodiment of compassion, and is often regarded as his female manifestation.
