Tapacito Ruin stands out as one of several public cultural sites overseen by the Bureau of Land Management, Farmington Field Office in New Mexico. Dating back to constructed summer AD 1694, Tapacito is among the earliest known pueblitos and boasts a unique design. Unlike most of its contemporaries, it lacks exterior doors or windows, with access to the rooms gained through roof hatches and ladders. Originally featuring at least seven ground floor rooms and a parapet, its massive walls were built using the "core-and-veneer" technique also employed in many earlier Chacoan structures. The site may have been constructed by refugees from the Pueblo of Jemez following hostilities with the Spanish in July 1694. By the time of a documented attack near this location by forces under Roque Madrid during a 1705 punitive campaign against the Navajo, Tapacito Ruin might already have been abandoned. In 1987, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information, visit https://www.blm.gov/visit/defensive-sites-of-dinetah
