Tapa beaters have been a staple in pacific cultures for centuries, expertly crafting traditional bark cloth, or tapa, prized for its cultural significance and beauty. Tapa production is primarily concentrated in Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji, although it has also been made in Java, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Hawaii with great success. As part of the groundbreaking art project series "Ghosts in the form of gifts," commissioned by Massey University Wellington in 2009, this incredible tapa beater was developed to create an array of intricate objects that have garnered widespread recognition. Bronwyn Holloway-Smith created a fascinating series of objects that are meticulously designed as replicas of artifacts that were once lost or misplaced during the tenure of the Museum of New Zealand at its former location on Buckle St. Today, this building is occupied by Massey University's College of Creative Arts. The development of these remarkable objects involved an exhaustive process of drawing, digital 3D rendering, and finally, printing using the revolutionary RepRap technology. The intricate digital files for the artifacts are generously made available under a generous Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license for educational purposes. Credits go to Bronwyn Holloway-Smith and Vik Olliver for their remarkable contributions to this art project.
