The Tauranga Heritage Collection proudly showcases the Taonga Whakairo, a stunning Tata (canoe bailer) dating back to approximately 1500. This remarkable artifact is made from Pukatea wood and measures Artefact number 0583/83 in our ethnology collection. As part of the rich cultural heritage of Tauranga Moana, this canoe bailer has been carefully preserved for future generations. We extend heartfelt thanks to Dean Flavell, Cultural Heritage Manager, who made this acquisition possible through his tireless efforts. We also acknowledge the support of the Tauranga City Council in making this collection available to the public.
