The mainstay of Soviet armored forces throughout World War II was the T-34 tank. Its design enabled it to be continually improved to meet the evolving demands of the Eastern Front. As the war continued, the T-34 became more powerful but also easier and less expensive to produce. The Soviet industry produced over 80,000 T-34s in various versions, allowing increasing numbers to be deployed on the battlefield as the conflict progressed despite heavy losses to the German military.[10] Many light and medium tanks in Red Army service were eventually replaced by the T-34, which was also the most-produced tank of the war. Moreover, it ranks as the second-most-produced tank in history, eclipsed only by its successor, the T-54/55 series.[11] The development of the T-34 led directly to the creation of the T-54/55 tank family and ultimately gave rise to other models such as the T-62, T-72, and T-90. Today, many armies around the world still rely on Chinese tanks derived from the T-55 design and several of these older models remain in service worldwide with at least 27 countries employing them in their arsenals.
