The Soviet experimental heavy tank, Object 279, was developed in 1957 at Kirov Plant, Leningrad, under engineer L. Troyanov's leadership. Its pre-production was completed in late 1959, based on 1956's heavy tank operational requirements. Distinctive features of this tank included a four-track running gear with fuel tanks as longitudinal beams and hydro-pneumatic suspension. The ground pressure was minimized to 0.6 kg/cm2, enabling smooth movement across swampy terrain, soft soil, and obstacle-ridden areas. Powered by a 1000 hp 2DG-8M diesel engine, it reached speeds of up to 55 km/h with an active range of 300 km on one refuel. Moreover, it was equipped with auto fire-fighting systems, smoke laying equipment, and a combat compartment heating and cooling system.
