Tank Object 279 was a Soviet experimental heavy tank created at the end of 1959 by engineers at the Kirov Plant in Leningrad. Led by engineer L. Troyanov, the team began work on the tank in 1957 based on operational requirements for heavy tanks developed in 1956. By the end of 1959, a pre-production model was completed. This groundbreaking tank boasted exceptional cross-country capability thanks to its four-track running gear mounted on two longitudinal, rectangular hollow beams that also served as fuel tanks. The tank's suspension system utilized complex hydrotransformers and three-speed planetary gearboxes for smooth operation. A worm-type track adjuster further enhanced the tank's mobility. With a specific ground pressure of only 0.6 kg/cm2, the heavy vehicle was able to navigate challenging terrain with ease, including swampy areas, soft soils, and obstacles such as Czech hedgehogs and antitank barriers. The tank was powered by a powerful 1000 hp 2DG-8M diesel engine, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 55 km/h while maintaining an active range of 300 km on a single refuel. Additionally, the tank featured auto fire-fighting systems, smoke laying equipment, and a combat compartment heating and cooling system.
