The 10.5cm K18 tank destroyer was developed by Krupp, beginning in 1939, as a weapon specifically designed to attack bunkers at ranges beyond which the bunker could return fire. With the fall of France, the initial purpose for this tank became obsolete, so it was suggested that it be used as a heavy tank destroyer. Two prototypes were produced and demonstrated in front of Hitler in March 1941. If the trials proved successful, series production was anticipated to begin in Spring 1942.
