This is a portafilter tamping station for the common Joe Frex bottomless portafilter for Gaggia Classic. The Joe Frex portafilter's handle is a different shape and size compared to the one that comes with the machine. The little protrusion at the bottom allows the portafilter to sit in the station without tipping over, but really the groove could just be lowered so that the handle sits on your work surface. Oh well, next time :-D
