Talon - Version 4

Talon - Version 4

Mostly just having some fun with this print (although I do have some ideas for using this down the road). There are only two pieces to this: the talon and the stand (the ball is not included, but there are plenty of other options for that available at the usual places). The claw has a plug at the bottom end for mounting in a socket in the stand.

See Version 1 for a print file for the stand.

Here are some dimensions you may find useful:

The claw is made for a ball with a diameter of 2.5 in. (63.5 mm). The plug has a diameter of 0.45 in. (11.43 mm) and a length of 0.45 in. (11.43 mm); the plug also has a 1 degree taper to make it easier to fit it into the socket hole.

I plan to make this model in several different variations; this is version 4.

Version 4 : This is the same shape as Version 3 - Talons are straight segments with "knuckles". The claws extend only to the center of the ball, making it very easy to insert or remove the ball. The difference from Version 3 is that in this version each claw is a separate print file. This makes it possible to print a very large scaled up version - the largest size you printer can manage for a single claw. This also reduces the amount of support material required for printing a very large version.

The original model was created in OnShape 3D CAD - the relevant CAD file is available here:

https://cad.onshape.com/documents/0716787efa057a8839b09f7f/w/1e343278069a753c83a7de07/e/98bedb8e584a90d0fac62631

Print instructions

Print the "claw support tube"upright with a brim as shown in the photo. Note that this is a separate piece in this version - not integral with the claws as in versions 1 thru 3.

Print each claw lying sideways, with supports and a brim (see photo). The claws are a tight fit in the tube - you will need to remove any burrs on the corners where the pieces fit together.

The claw shapes are not identical - you will need to print each claw 1, 2, 3 and 4.
