The Taj Mahal stands majestically as a gleaming white marble mausoleum situated in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to honor his beloved third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal shines brightly as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage." In 1631, Shah Jahan, ruler of the empire at its peak prosperity, was overcome with grief when his third wife, a beautiful Persian princess named Mumtaz Mahal, passed away during the birth of their 14th child, Gauhara Begum. The construction of the Taj Mahal commenced in 1632. The court records reveal that Shah Jahan's sorrowful story inspired the love tale traditionally held as an inspiration for the Taj Mahal. The primary mausoleum was finished in 1648 and the surrounding buildings and gardens were completed five years later.
