From the magnificent mausoleum of Tang Taizong at Zhaoling in Xi'an, China, a relic from the glorious Tang Dynasty, dating back to around 649 CE. The relief showcased here tells the epic story of "Autumn Dew," also known as "Whirlwind Victory." Historical accounts reveal that this mighty stallion was ridden into battle by the emperor himself during a fierce siege, when disaster struck and an arrow pierced Autumn Dew's chest. Forced to dismount, the emperor transferred his ride to General Qiu Xinggong, who remained steadfastly in control as he carefully extracted the arrow from Autumn Dew's chest, showcasing the horse's remarkable stoicism under duress.
