The February 28 Incident was a pivotal event that shook Taiwan to its core on February 28, 1947. The unrest began as a protest against corruption and mismanagement by the Nationalist government, but quickly escalated into violent clashes between Taiwanese civilians and the authorities. Led by the police, the Nationalist forces cracked down harshly on the protesters, killing hundreds and arresting thousands in the process. The brutal suppression sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for an end to the regime's tyranny and oppression. As the situation spiralled out of control, President Chiang Kai-shek returned from a trip abroad, promising to restore order and calm the streets. However, his efforts only served to further inflame tensions, and the violence continued unabated. In the aftermath of the incident, the Nationalist government implemented a series of repressive measures aimed at crushing dissent and silencing opposition voices. Martial law was declared, and anyone deemed a threat to national security was detained or executed without trial. The February 28 Incident marked a turning point in Taiwan's history, as it exposed the dark underbelly of the Nationalist regime and set the stage for decades of turmoil and repression that would follow.
