A train is a mode of transportation comprising of interconnected vehicles that typically move along rail tracks to carry passengers or cargo. Etymologically, the term 'train' stems from Old French 'trahiner', which traces its roots back to Latin 'trahere', meaning 'to pull' or 'to draw'. A train's propulsion is generally sourced from a separate locomotive or individual motors in self-propelled multiple units. Though steam power was historically widespread, diesel and electric locomotives are now more prevalent; the latter may be powered by overhead wires or additional rails. Horses, engine-driven systems, water-operated cable winches, gravity, pneumatics, gas turbines, or batteries can also propel trains. Train tracks typically feature two running rails, sometimes accompanied by extra rails for electric conduction and rack use. Monorails and maglev guideways are employed occasionally.[1]
