Tactile Moon

A Touch of the Universe - MOON We created a tactile 3D model of the Earth's Moon, designed to help blind and visually impaired people learn about the main surface features on the Moon. It is not a topographical replica: for example, we added relief to crater rays that are very bright but have no relevant height in reality. We made this addition because crater rays are one of the main visible characteristics of craters. We used NASA's original map from the Clementine mission to compile our model. The original image was greatly smoothed out to clarify features and avoid confusion for users. A number of Moon features were selected and enhanced using GIMP software.
