Tabula Rasa Matching Game

Tabula Rasa Matching Game

After creating my Stargate board game, I wanted to add a second, easy to play Stargate-Related game. The name comes from a "memory loss" episode of Stargate Atlantis. Please leave comments and enjoy!

Tabula Rasa
for 1-4 players

This is a simple memory game using the Chevron’s from the Milky Way Stargate.

This easy to print game includes the play tiles, viewing trays, and a printed box with lid. No supports are needed for any of the printed parts. I have included all pre-sliced print files, as well as STL’s for all of the parts.

There are a total of 48 tiles (you need two sets). I printed mine in Inland Red PLA+, Inland Blue PLA+, and Inland White PLA+ (as a contrast for the chevron’s and borders).
The included pre-sliced print files include a color change at 2.15 for the tiles - this allows the Chevron to be a different color, and provides for a nice border as well. I have provided 3 print files, as I have them set in groups of 16

There is also a “tile tray” that allows the each player to view up to 5 tiles at once while playing the game. I printed a total of 4 trays (in two colors). The pre-sliced file for the game tray prints two at once. These trays are stackable to allow them to fit in the box.

The box will hold all of the game pieces, and up to 4 tile trays.

Playing the game

My set includes some special pieces along with the Chevron’s – there are 39 matching Chevrons, 6 Iris’s, and 3 blank “wild cards”

The Chevron’s can be played by themselves, or with the addition of the extra tiles

2 – 4 player game:

Mix and spread the tiles from one set face between the two players. Take the second set, mix and spread them to one side (with access for both players). For this discussion, the “RED” set is between the two players, these are the ones you need to match. Each player selects 5 tiles from the “BLUE” set.

Player one flips over a tile to see if it matches one of the five they have. If there is no match, they flip the tile back in place and select another tile from the “BLUE” set. Player two goes next. This continues back and forth, till a player gets a match. When a player gets a match, they grab both tiles, stack them, and place them on their side of the gaming area (counts as one point). Play continues in this way until a player runs out of tiles (winner) or there are no more to select from the “BLUE” tiles (in this case the points are counted to determine the winner).

Wild Card and IRIS tiles:

These are special tiles, and are treated differently than a normal match:

Wild Card (blank) tile:

If you have in your possession a blank tile, this tile will match ANY tile on the board (including a duplicate blank tile). When this is played, these are placed to the right or left of the gaming area, with the “matched” tile faceup (only if it is matched with something other then a blank tile). Anyone possessing a duplicate tile, may add to the stack on their next turn (no points are awarded). That is their only play on that turn.

Stargate IRIS:

If you flip over an IRIS, there are two possible outcomes. If you have a matching IRIS, you have a match, take the point, and get another turn. If you do not have a match, you take two (2) from the “BLUE” tiles, and play continues.

Team Play:

In the Team Play version, four players are grouped in two’s – when a player flips over a tile, his teammate may also provide a match. Points are shared amongst the teammates.

Speed Play:

2-4 players - When a player turns over a tile, any player may call match, then take the point. Whoever runs out of tiles first is declared the winner. Any player calling match (and not having one) has to add two tiles to there collection.

Solitaire:

I did not write any specific rules for solitaire play, but there is nor reason it could not be played that way as well.

Design:

This was created using all of the Chevron's from my Stargate Game featured here on Prusa Printers. The files were converted to DXF files (AutoCAD) and manipulated in Fusion 360.

See my other game related items on Prusa Printers:

Comments?
