The copper-alloy tablespoon was excavated from the grounds of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site during an archaeological investigation. It was carefully scanned in three dimensions using a NextEngine Desktop 3D scanner on January 10, 2018. The digital model that resulted proved to be flawed and required repair by Virginia Commonwealth University forensic anthropologist Terrie Simmons-Ehrhardt. The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, operated by the National Park Service in Washington, D.C., retains ownership of this artifact, which is cataloged as FRDO 5627. This object has been scanned into a digital format through the Virtual Curation Lab's scanning process.
