Table Lamp V3 - Single Piece 3D Printable Lamp
thingiverse
This Table Lamp design is a hobby project that has been ongoing since 2017, with recent work resumed in 2020. The goal is to create an attractive and full-sized table lamp that can be 3D printed as a single piece on larger format printers without support material. This allows for easy installation of the socket and wiring. V3 is now available for order at https://www.ryang3d.com/shop/3d-printed-lamp/. Supporting this project by donating or purchasing a lamp from the link above will be greatly appreciated. If enough interest is generated, more lampshade designs, lithographs, and 3D printable (STL) models may follow. V3 has only three spokes and can accommodate most twist switch sockets. The STL file for V3 is currently not available for download but may become so in the future. V2 is still in progress and can be seen at https://www.ryang3d.com/portfolio/3d-printed-lamp-revisited/. Despite several iterations, I skipped straight to V3. V1 is my first design, shown in white in the photo above, which measures approximately 305 mm (1 ft) tall. While I'm generally pleased with it, assembly was a bit tricky, and I feel it could be stronger at the point where the shade attaches to the main body. You may also want to print the shade section with 100% infill to avoid cross-hatched lighting effects around the lower rim of the shade. Using slicers like Simplify3D should allow you to adjust the infill to 20% or less for the rest of the lamp base. I plan to revisit this design in the future, and I'm currently back working on it again after a hiatus. The latest update incorporates some new design tweaks that make printing possible without support material. This version, V1.1, should be printed with no supports and upside down just like V1. It's slightly taller than its predecessor and features a wider/taller shade as well as a larger hole in the bottom for easier assembly. The next update, V1.2, includes thicker and stronger ribs that make printing smoother and the lamp overall stronger. This version is about 13 inches tall by 10 inches in diameter. The photo of the lamp with a "gold" base and white shade is a V1.2 print. It printed perfectly with zero support material required. Please note the uneven coloring on the base, which was an experiment to change the filament color mid-print. Later, I changed the design to accommodate light sockets with integrated pull chains (like this one: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Westinghouse-2-1-4-in-On-Off-Pull-Chain-Socket-7041100/204836044). However, I'm still testing and tweaking this design, and it may not fit pull-chain sockets properly yet. If you want to print this lamp, I recommend sticking with V1.2 for now. Recently, I've been working on V2 again, which is coming soon: https://www.ryang3d.com/portfolio/3d-printed-lamp-revisited/. And in 2020, I resumed work on the project after a hiatus. The goal remains to create an attractive and full-sized table lamp that can be 3D printed as a single piece on larger format printers without support material. Here are some notes for printing V1: Print upside down with the top of the lampshade on your print bed, using no support material (unless you're printing V1). You can use any Rostock MAX v2 or later model printer. Infill should be 20%, and resolution should be 250 microns. For post-printing hardware, you'll need to either pick up a lamp kit or separate parts from Home Depot's lighting department shelves. For my first build of this lamp, I used the following items: * Westinghouse Porcelain Keyless Socket Adapter Kit (I used the socket, fiber washer, screw collar loop, 1/8-IP x 1" nipple, and locknut from this kit) http://www.homedepot.com/p/Westinghouse-Porcelain-Keyless-Socket-Adapter-Kit-7040800/204836042 * Westinghouse 8 Ft. Cord Set http://www.homedepot.com/p/Westinghouse-8-ft-SPT-2-Silver-Cord-Set-7009800/204836007 * Westinghouse Feed-Through On/Off Switch (optional, but recommended) http://www.homedepot.com/p/Westinghouse-White-Feed-Through-On-Off-Switch-7050000/204836050 HINT: I used some super glue to stick the locknut to the interior of the lamp which made tightening the socket down a bit easier.
