Ta Yü Game Tiles

Designed by Niek Neuwahl. In Ta Yü, a strategic game of connections, players on one side strive to expand from the central starting tile outward to reach the western and eastern edges of the board while opponents aim to secure the northern and southern edges. Each turn involves drawing a tile and deciding where to place it, extending the network of tiles already present on the board. Several key features transform this straightforward concept into an engaging game. Firstly, each tile is 3x1 in size and has precisely three outlets or connection points. Secondly, scoring is not a simple matter of counting the number of spots reached on one edge and adding it to the number reached on the other; instead, the product of these two numbers determines the score. This means players cannot focus solely on one side while ignoring the other, as zero times any number remains zero. Thirdly, three special points on each side of the board award double points if reached, introducing an element of focus to decision-making. Players must adopt a balanced approach, playing both offense and defense, and often face dilemmas in determining whether to use a particular tile for expansion or protection.
