T-55 tanks burst onto the scene as a series of Soviet main battle tanks following World War II. The first T-54 prototype rolled off the assembly line at Nizhny Tagil in late 1945, marking a major milestone in tank design. An upgraded version of the T-55 tank, known as the T 55A, boasted enhanced nuclear protection and ditched its bow machinegun. From 1962 to 1970, over 1,800 T-55 and T 55A tanks were shipped to East Germany by the U.S.S.R., cementing their place in military history.
