The Red Army's T-50 light tank saw development on the eve of World War II as a crucial upgrade or replacement for their aging Soviet tank fleet, which had largely been comprised of improved foreign designs up until 1939. This realization came about through experience gained during the Spanish Civil War. At that time, the majority of Red Army tanks were basically improved versions of foreign tanks with modified features such as turrets and armaments. As an example, the most prominent tank in service was the T-26 light infantry tank, a nearly exact replica of the British Vickers 6-Ton tank. The sole modification made to it included the addition of a Soviet-designed turret paired with a 45 mm gun. Yet by World War's eve, Soviet engineers began rapidly designing entirely new types of tanks - including new light, medium and heavy variants all engineered from scratch within their own nation. It is now evident that the Red Army's T-50 tank was crafted with the intent to surpass its older counterpart, the T-26 infantry tank. Consequently, in wartime preplanning sessions it had been anticipated that the T-50 would become the most widely utilized Soviet battle vehicle on hand for service alongside their other trusty tanks - namely, the swift and formidable BT.
