Human: Who doesn't love an ancient creature? The first time T. rex was discovered - but it's not that simple! Marsh poses in 1872 with his fossil assistants armed with guns. Marsh was Cope's arch rival during the Bone Wars, going as far as blowing up each other's finds with dynamite. This public domain image is from 1872. The discovery of T. rex started during the Bone Wars of the late 1800s. In 1892, during the height of the bone wars between Cope and Marsh, Cope discovered two partial vertebrae. He studied them haphazardly and assumed they came from a new ceratopsid dinosaur, naming it Manospondylus gigas - Giant Porous Vertebra. Over one hundred years later, in 2000, Peter Larson found the original discovery spot for Manospondylus gigas. They excavated and found more of the animal. Larson realized Cope's old find is actually a T. rex! Since Manospondylus gigas is the first actual T. rex discovered, its name would normally be valid and all T. rexes would become M. gigas. However, the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature updated rules in 2000, stating any name published long ago can't be replaced by an older one - since T. rex fits this rule, the tyrant lizard king will remain named. It's amazing how these ancient creatures could get so large eating only meat. This ring is made for size T and weighs around thirteen grams of silver when finished.
