T.C. Walker's House
sketchfab
This house once belonged to Thomas Calhoun Walker, a trailblazing African American lawyer who broke barriers in Gloucester County. Born into slavery in 1862, T.C. Walker spent his life fighting for the rights of African Americans in his community. In 1891, he made history by becoming the first African American elected to the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors and went on to shatter more records as Virginia's first African American Collector of Customs and Advisor of Negro Affairs for the Virginia Emergency Relief Administration. He also served as a dedicated superintendent of Gloucester's African American schools. Today, Hampton University proudly owns this historic property and plans to beautifully restore it in the years to come.
