The T-54/T-55 series, Soviet main battle tanks introduced post World War II, were developed from 1945 to 1948 at Nizhny Tagil and Kharkov. Initially, the T-34-85 accounted for 88% of production through the 1950s due to uncovered issues in the T-54 prototype. Despite this, the T-54 became the primary tank for Soviet Army and Warsaw Pact countries' armored units. These tanks have been involved in numerous global conflicts since the 20th century's latter half. The T-54/55 series is history's most-produced tank, with production estimates ranging from 86,000 to 100,000. They were later replaced by tanks like the T-62, T-64, T-72, T-80, and T-90 in Soviet and Russian armies but remain operational in up to 50 other countries, some with advanced retrofitting. The Cold War saw Soviet tanks not directly face NATO adversaries in Europe; however, the debut of the T-54/55 during the 1950s spurred UK's development of the Royal Ordnance L7 gun and USA's M60 Patton tank.
