It was the successor to the T-34, offering improved ride and cross-country performance as well as much greater armor. Equipped with an 85 mm main gun from the start, the T-44 outperformed the T-34 in many areas, making it a significant upgrade. Built in large numbers, over 2,500 T-44s were produced, compared to about 58,000 T-34s. Although the T-44 was available by the end of the war, it did see combat action. Its upper front plate could withstand hits from the German 88mm guns (KwK 36 and KwK 43) found on the Tiger I and Tiger II. It was also 1 ton heavier than the T-34-85 and slightly slower.
