It replaced the T-34, offering enhanced ride quality and improved cross-country performance, along with significantly increased armor protection. Equipped to carry an 85mm main gun, it was tested after the T-34 had already adopted this same weapon. Since both tanks provided similar performance, introducing the T-44 wasn't deemed as crucial as ramping up T-34 production. Approximately 2,000 T-44s were produced compared to about 58,000 T-34s. Although available by war's end, it remained unused in combat. However, if deployed in battle, it would have significantly outdone the T-34. Its upper front plate could resist a hit from German 88mm guns (KwK 36 and KwK 43) found on Tiger I and Tiger II tanks. Additionally, it weighed one ton less than the T-34-85 and was slightly faster.
