It was developed in the early 1920s and played a pivotal role in the early development of Soviet armored forces. The T-18 was a small, one-man tank armed with a 37 mm Hotchkiss M1909 tank gun and a single 7.62 mm Hotchkiss M1909 machine gun. It had a maximum speed of around 8 miles per hour (13 kilometers per hour) and featured a fully rotating turret, which was an innovation at the time. While the T-18 was a pioneering effort in Soviet tank design, it became obsolete relatively quickly due to advancements in tank technology. It was phased out of active service during the late 1920s and early 1930s as more advanced tank designs, like the T-26, were developed and introduced. Nonetheless, the T-18 MS-1 played a crucial role in the early days of Soviet armored warfare and contributed to the development of future Soviet tank designs.
