Bertalan Székely was born on May 8, 1835, in Kolozsvár. He was a Hungarian painter who specialized in history and portrait painting with a style that blended Romanticism and Academia. From the 1860s to the 1880s, he primarily painted portraits of women and then shifted his focus to landscapes. Székely also created decorative murals for notable buildings such as the Matthias Church, Budapest Opera House, and City Hall in Kecskemét. Later, he became fascinated with movement studies pioneered by Edweard Muybridge and Étienne-Jules Marey, conducting some research of his own.
