Location: Szolyva (Szvaljava), Ukraine\nRecord Number: MNM 148/1870.5\nDimensions: 12.5 x 11.3 cm\nAge: 10th century\nIn July of 1870, archaeologist Tivadar Lehoczky unearthed a male grave site on the outskirts of Szolyva with a horse, food accompaniment, weapon, and metal plate shield. The metal plate was not found in a wearable position (at the waist), but rather near the deceased's skull. As a result, the discoverer – as it later turned out incorrectly – identified the item as a head ornament. "It is undoubtedly certain that the silver sheet I sent and described, adorned with golden arabesques, was worn on the head; in addition to the remains of a brown felt-like fabric, I found more fragments at the skull and carefully lifted them up myself. The shape of this silver decorative plate resembles those plates worn by our path-clearers on their hats. It is certain that the young man whose helmet was decorated with this fine-mannered ornament wore it on his forehead (…).” (Tivadar Lehoczky: About the Szolyvai Tomb. Archaeological Newsletter 6 (1886), 379–380).\nHungarian National Museum - KDS
