The Italian ship Transatlantic Syria sank on August 4th, 1906 off the coast of Cabo de Palos, near Cartagena. Measuring 115 meters in length and carrying over 900 passengers traveling from Genoa to South America (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay), this ill-fated voyage claimed more than 200 lives. Weeks passed as wave after wave of seaweed-laden bodies washed ashore on beaches across Murcia: Sea murciana, along with Torrevieja, Guardamar and Santa Pola. In the Santa Pola old cemetery lies a humble monument dedicated to nameless passengers - mostly Italians who perished in this disaster.
