The cavities hold a filler, such as polystyrene beads or walnut husk, which adjusts to different pressures. The pump enables vacuum or pressure within these spaces. Three states exist for the filler: under vacuum, it's tight and conforms to body shape; at atmospheric pressure, it's easily moldable to match boat contours; above this pressure, the filler remains unaffected. Additional options include adjustable pillow heights using multiple expanders, Velcro for connecting pads, or replacing the air switch with a permanently connected hose and valves per pillow.
