A Synchromesh Cable idler pulley from SDP/SI is a great alternative to belts for linear motion on RepRap printers. See it in action here (http://youtu.be/0GMzYMI6rf8). It provides zero backlash and is cost-effective and lightweight. For a Prusa, you'll need one pulley for the x-axis and two for the y-axis. After printing and inserting the bearing while still hot, adjust your steps-per-mm in your firmware using this formula: (steps per motor revolution) / (number of teeth * cable pitch). For a 15-tooth pulley with 1.8-degree stepper motors and 1/16 microstepping drivers, it would be approximately 55.993 steps per millimeter. Good luck!
