Symbols of St. Matthew, St. Mark and St. Luke
myminifactory
The intricate carving showcases three figures, originally standing atop an eagle-shaped lectern that represented John. The eagle was a symbol of John's authority, while the other three creatures – a man for Matthew, a lion for Mark, and an ox for Luke – embodied the essence of each Gospel author. From this very lectern, the Gospels were read aloud to the congregation. This carving is likely a companion piece to another lectern support acquired at the same time as part of collection 5797-1859.
