Syma Transmitter FPV Phone holder
thingiverse
This is a mount for a cell phone to use with your Syma transmitter over WIFI capable cameras as an FPV monitor. The cell mount fits a Samsung NOTE 3 in a case perfectly, but it also works with a NOTE 5 in its case with some effort. I tested the product to ensure that A) the phone wouldn't fall out and damage a more valuable drone (X8C), B) grabbing the phone holder would not cause it to break away from the transmitter. I think this holder is quite robust, almost chunky. If you don't have a NOTE 3 or are unhappy with the design, I included the 123D Design file so that you can modify the mount to your phone or transmitter if needed. The phone weights as much as the entire transmitter, so it's recommended to use a lanyard for stability. You can also use a rubber band to keep the phone from sliding out if its case is not exactly as wide as mine. Regarding phone mounts, I used tophe75's idea but modified his design because he uses too much plastic and it wouldn't work with my mount. If you have a different phone and more time, you might prefer a mount like http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1133548. The design requires either 5 3mm x 20mm or #4-40 x .75" machine screws (also pan head/cheese head) with matching nuts. I only needed 3 screw/nuts and it was strong enough, but you can add the other 2 if your holder is not as tight. I used captive screw holders that work for both #4 nuts and 3mm nuts on both the top and bottom so you can point the screw heads up or down. For material and printing, I printed the "Horse Shoe" pieces at .3 layer height and 50% infill with 3 shells. You want this piece to be very robust, while a .3 layer resolution and 10% infill is enough for the phone holder. I recommend using 3 shells on this part as the screw that holds it in place transmits all its retaining force through those 3 shells. I printed a complete set in both PLA and ABS. I think ABS is a better material for this application, but the PLA held up fine. Since PLA is less flexible, the screw interface between the phone holder and the horse shoe mount will break with rough handling. Both PLA and ABS mounts were dropped, and both held up. Lastly, the phone holder could benefit from a sun shade. There are many cell phone mounts on Thingiverse that you can modify to attach to this mount (16.5mm from edge to screw hold center). I included the original 123D Design file so that you can make those changes for your phone if you don't have a NOTE series phone. Printer Settings: XYZ da Vinci Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: .3 Infill: 50% on transmitter mount /10% on phone holder Notes: I printed in both PLA and ABS. ABS is a better choice for this project, but if you don't have ABS, PLA will be fine. Use 50% infill and 3 shells on the transmitter mount and 10% infill and 3 shells for the phone mount. You also need 5 machine screws and nuts. Either 3mm x 20mm or #4-40 x .75" pan head screws are fine, with the other 2 being for insurance purposes. I recommend sanding the two transmitter mount faces flat - when screwed together, there should be no daylight between them. My printing leaves a wavy surface that took two seconds to sand flat.
