The curved scimitar, widespread throughout the Middle East since the Ottoman era, has roots in Abbasid-era Khurasan dating back to the 9th century. It is believed to originate from the ancient makhaira type and gets its Arabic name saif, which is derived from the Greek word xiphos for a straight, double-edged sword. By the 12th century, the Persian shamshir emerged and gained popularity in Persia by the early 16th century. It also had counterparts in Turkey (the kilij), the Mughal Empire (the talwar).
