I picked up a 30mm Prox sensor at our local surplus store and decided to give it a try, since retail prices for these usually hover around $100 but I scored one for just $15. The Omron E2K-X15ME1 Prox sensor works perfectly with my glass setup, which has PEI attached to the top - it runs on 12-24DCV and can detect objects up to 15mm away from the bed. To mount this sensor, I designed a special holder that positions the lower nut inside the housing. While not necessary, I thought I'd give it a shot. Cleaning out the supports wasn't too bad if you take your time - just use longer screws (40-45mm length, 3mm diameter) to attach it to the lower screw holes that normally hold angle supports for the extruder bed. I printed this sensor holder using PETG at 0.2 layer height with two perimeters and three top and bottom layers, all within Repetier's 20% infill and support settings. It turned out great! Feel free to check it out in Tinkercad - you can edit it online at https://www.tinkercad.com/things/gH9CzOHND4S.
