Swiss Vetterli M78 Infantry Rifle
sketchfab
The Swiss army deployed the Vetterli rifles from 1869 until they were replaced by Schmidt–Rubin rifles in 1889, while modified versions of these rifles saw use with the Italian Army. A combination of innovative features made the Swiss Vetterli rifles stand out. They integrated a tubular magazine inspired by the American Winchester Model 1866, paired with a standard bolt that boasted two opposing rear locking lugs for added security. This novel design eclipsed earlier bolt actions from Dreyse and Chassepot, offering a significant upgrade in reliability. Moreover, the Vetterli rifles were the first repeating bolt-action models to incorporate a self-cocking mechanism and a precision-made small-caliber bore.
