The Swell Pebble is inspired by the flowing surge of water, capturing a sense of chaotic tidal forces inside a vibrant print.Designed to exhibit the capabilities of the Stratasys printers. Swell twists and deforms creating different patterns and densities. Encouraging the viewer to inspect the 3d print from different angles, to feel the three-dimensional motion. IntroI have a fascination with geometry and pattern. As an architect and designer, I am particularly interested in the creation and manipulation of space. I believe the most exciting opportunity with the Stratasys printer is to print in bright colours within a transparent medium. To be able to truly experiment with solid and void space. To make the negative space an active part of the print, using it to imply geometry. Typically achieving this is hampered by the need for structure and stability. But by embedding the print in clear medium, allows the prints to ignore the constraints of gravity. Not simply a surface texture, but a three-dimensional design with depth.Design ProcessThe pebble is a relatively small canvas, it is a challenge to capture the solid/void effects I wanted in this small space. My initial design studies were too subtle with variation only being visible over hundreds of elements. I realised I needs a high impact pattern that filled the pebble. The entire design is The swell pebble is designed with computational processes to script a flowing geometry, the distorted and twisting nature magnifies the effects and deformation of the void space. Ensuring it can be experienced in the smaller pebble format. Nick Tyrerwww.tyrer.io
