Swanee whistle / slide whistle

thingiverse

This is a slide whistle (also known as swanee whistle or piston flute), and I'm happy to show you how one works. Simply blow from the mouthpiece and then slide in and out of the piston to create different notes. You can hear an example here: https://soundcloud.com/licheong2/3d-printed-slide-whistle-demo A special thanks is due to Laurent Muchacho of Smoothz's Hub, who helped me improve this design, print a working version, and even tried out different mouthpieces until we got it just right. For best results, both the main body and the piston are split into two parts, making them easier to print. This is because most printers can't support hollow tubes without supporting material. When assembling your whistle, be sure to glue the piston onto a small disc and then use it to slide in and out. As you do this, it will change the pitch of the slide whistle. If you want even more control over your sounds, try wrapping the disc with some felt, cloth or kitchen paper to block the air completely. Not only will this make a big difference, but it will also reduce noise when moving the piston back and forth. Last update: 8-27-2015
