Their closest relatives include geese and ducks, making them part of the Anserinae subfamily along with geese in the Cygnini tribe. In some cases, they are considered a distinct subfamily, Cygninae. There are six or seven living species of swans in the Cygnus genus, plus one extinct species. Additionally, there is another species known as the coscoroba swan, which is no longer classified as a true swan. Swans typically form long-lasting pair bonds, although "divorce" can occur after nesting failure, or if one mate dies and the remaining swan finds a new partner.
